Medicare Solutions for Seniors: Coverage and Plans

Pharmacist advising a woman on medication at a pharmacy counter.
Medicare Supplement plans, Medicare

What are Parts A & B?

Parts A & B are also referred to as Original Medicare. They are your base coverages. Part A covers Hospitals, Part B covers Drs and other Medical.

What is Part C?

Part C is more commonly known as Medicare Advantage. It is one of 2 types of coverage you can add to your Original Medicare to give more complete coverage.

Advantage plans cover more than just what Original Medicare covers because it bundles in your Dental/Vision/Hearing and Drug coverages (on most plans).

What is Part D?

When I first got into this industry, I remembered Part D as "D for Drugs" so that is your Prescription Drug coverage.

Part D is a required coverage according to Medicare. It typically gets pairs with a Supplement (Medigap) plan.

What is Medicare Supplement (Medigap)?

A Medicare Supplement plan is the other type of coverage you can add to your Original Medicare. It directly supplements just your Parts A & B giving you very complete medical coverage but nothing more.

Supplement plans come in their own variety of letters including Plan F, Plan G, and Plan N.

What does Medicare NOT cover?

Medicare does not cover some specific services such as Dental/Vision/Hearing and Prescription Drugs, as well as a yearly physical.

These coverages can be obtained by adding other policies to your Medicare. See the areas above.

Medicare Advantage plans serve as an alternative to Original Medicare and are commonly structured as HMO or PPO plans that collaborate with network providers. These plans often offer enhanced Medicare coverage beyond what is provided by Original Medicare, making them a favored option for individuals turning 65. Additionally, many people consider Medicare Supplement plans to further enhance their coverage.
